For those who wonder what the status of this LiveJounal account is, I'll give you an update. I post in my blog frequently and rarely post here since the podcast has ceased. However, I still use this account almost daily to read LJ and comment. So while I no longer post here, I still read LJ. Thus if you are on my friend's list, I am reading your LJ. Please take this into consideration when updating your friend's list. Thank you.

It will only come out a few times a month, if that, and will contain subjects selected by me that have relevance to the Thelemic community; these issues include things like new publications, music, events, and other points of interest. Comments on the Treasure House of Pearls

Over the last few days I have had a number of posts that have generated significant discussion. I am pleased about this. However, some have complained that the threading in WordPress is not the clearest and that they have, sometimes, lost their place in the discussion. Also there is the fact that the syndication on LJ only has the main posts but not the comments. As I have said before, I strive to give solutions when I can and as a result, I have used WordPress’ comment RSS feed to make another LJ comment thread. The profile is here and you can subscribe to the comment thread here. That way you will see the comments as they are approved and posted.

WARNING: The RSS feed moves fast and any comments made in reply to an RSS feed post on LJ will be lost. To reply to a comment and have it included in the discussion, please click on the link at the top of the feed entry. This will take you right to the comment on the blog where you can respond directly. Again, you must respond on the blog itself for the comment to be saved. Also, it is easier if you become a registered user on the blog here. That way when you reply, all your data fields will be filled out. It makes it as easy as replying on LJ.

My email is back up and so is my website.

The Damage:
2.5 days of email lost
All my themes, files, customizations, etc. to WordPad lost
All my uploaded files lost (most I have been able to resurrect or have backups)
I have no confidence in my hosting company

The Silver Lining:
No blog posts or comments lost (the one backup they could get was my WordPad DB)
I am redesigning the look of my blog

Here is the company's explanation:

During the transfer of the server that hosts your account, we experienced a major hardware failure of the main hard disks as well as of some of the hard disks storing account backups. Unfortunately, the backup hard disk containing your account was among the damaged ones.

Our most experienced system administrators worked extremely hard together with the data center head manager to recover data from the broken disks. Despite all their efforts, most probably we will not be able to recover any data from those disks. Our administrators will keep trying until we exhaust the last possible resource to bring your website back online. So far only the databases have been recovered.

The SiteGround Terms of Use include a provision according to which we must compensate you as a customer for any downtime of your website. This compensation is limited to the fees you have paid for the time your website was down. In this particular case, the downtime was caused by circumstances beyond anyone’s control. Hardware failures cannot be predicted. Yet, we certainly hoped to avoid situations as the current one by migrating your account to new and better hardware.

We feel really bad when both our customers and we have to suffer losses due to circumstances beyond our control, such as hard disk failures. That is why, we would like to do our best not only in trying to repair the damage of the hardware failure, but also in compensating you for the downtime. If you would like to keep your account with us, we will offer you one year of free hosting services. This is our way to say thank you for sticking to us even in the hardest moments. If you decide to move your account away, though, we will respect your decision and will issue a refund on the unused months of pre-paid service.

The problem with this explanation is that it is bogus. Hard drive failures are common and that is why any responsible company has mechanisms to compensate including RAID, mirrors and multiple backup sites. The fact that SiteGround did not take these precautions is deeply concerning. I have not decided what I am going to do, find get a refund and find a new host or take the free year. The whole experience is disappointing. It may be a little while before the blog is exactly as I want it but it is up right now. I can also receive email. If you sent anything to me over the last 3 days, please resend it as I probably did not get it. Thanks.

SiteGround still has not resurrected my website, and more importantly, my email. I assure you I have been going back and forth with them letting them know how much of an inconvenience this is.

ISP Annoyance

The ISP that hosts thelema.nu is having server problems. This has caused my website and email to become unavailable at this time. I have no idea if my mail is being queued or just bounced. If you have to send me email, use my alternate address jcrow@mindspring.com.

Update: Mail will bounce. I may or may not get it depending on how long the sender's ISP server retries. I do not recommend the ISP SiteGround.com!

Last Call

Today is the last day at my employer of almost six years. In some ways it feels strange, in others it is exciting. Next week I start my part-time job working for a company that specializes in serving the computer needs of schools, churches, doctors, lawyers, etc. This will get me out of my rut of the same office, same place, and everyday. On the 21st I start classes full time too. So these next few weeks will be full of changes for me. For some reason August, every year, initiates some form of meaningful change in my life. This year’s is pretty significant.

As I mentioned before, part of this change is to remove me from LJ to a personal blog. I will still be checking into LJ, but it will not be frequent. To stay in touch with my blog, go to www.thelema.nu and sign up for the email notice about when I post or subscribe to the RSS feed, treasurehouse. Note there can be significant delays between when I post and when LJ updates it feed. I also can be reached via email jcrow [@] thelema [.] nu.

As for the podcast, there will be no change. It will continue to come out every two weeks or so. One is scheduled this weekend including a discussion with keith418 and an interview with author Chris Penczak. So make sure you are subscribed to the RSS feed for that! In the near future there are going to be some changes with Luxor Press and some other initiatives. So stay tuned! There is a lot going on!
